Spring break is the perfect excuse for a road trip, and this year we took a two-day escape from Charlotte to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It wasn't a long trip by any measure — just one full night and parts of two days — but it was exactly the kind of reset I needed. Go-karts, mountain overlooks, a rainy dome, some great food, and a lot of winding roads. Here's how it went.
Go-Karts, Golden Hour & Buffalo Wild Wings
We left Charlotte in the morning — a long but easy drive through the mountains.
Our first stop was NASCAR SpeedPark — an outdoor entertainment complex that ended up being a really fun few hours. We went go-karting, played mini golf, and grabbed lunch all in the same stretch. The go-karts were a highlight — nothing like flying around a track to wake you up after a long drive.
1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
NASCAR SpeedPark — go-karting, mini golf, and lunch
After that, we made our way toward Ben Morton Overlook for what was supposed to be a gorgeous Smoky Mountain sunset. The plan was good. The clouds had other ideas.
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
Ben Morton Overlook — waited for a sunset that never quite broke through the clouds
We stayed at the overlook from 6 to 7:30 hoping the clouds would clear. They didn't. But there's something oddly peaceful about standing at a mountain overlook even when the view is just a wall of soft gray mist.
By 8 PM we had checked into our hotel near downtown Gatlinburg, unpacked a little, and were back out the door by 8:30 for dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings. After a full day of driving and running around, everyone was ready to eat. We stayed until almost 11 PM.
8:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Hotel check-in near downtown Gatlinburg
8:30 PM – 10:45 PM
Buffalo Wild Wings — dinner
11:15 PM
Back at the hotel, asleep
Downtown, Kuwohi & the Drive Home
We checked out at 11 AM and walked around downtown Gatlinburg for a bit — the strip is always fun to wander through. It's one of those towns that's somehow always busy, even mid-morning on a Friday.
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Downtown Gatlinburg — exploring and taking pictures
For lunch we went to Mellow Mushroom, right in downtown Gatlinburg — always a solid choice.
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Mellow Mushroom — lunch
Next up: Kuwohi (formerly Clingman's Dome), the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Since it was raining again, I decided to wait in the car instead of hiking up to the observatory deck. Sometimes revisiting a place means you already know when it's not worth getting soaked.
2:15 PM – 3:00 PM
Drive up to Kuwohi (Clingman's Dome)
3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Kuwohi — waited in the car since it was raining (been here before)
We left at 4 PM and spent the next two hours making stops at overlooks along the mountain roads as we descended. This was honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole trip. The light was soft, the fog was rolling through the valleys, and every pullout had a completely different view.
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Winding down the mountain — overlook stops and photos all the way down
At 6 PM we pointed the car toward home. We ended the trip perfectly — stopping at Aroma, an Indian restaurant in Indian Land, SC, at about 9:30 PM. After two days of go-karts and American food, there was nothing better. We left around 10:30 and were home by 10:45.
9:30 PM – 10:30 PM
Aroma — Indian restaurant, Indian Land, SC
10:45 PM
Home
It was a short trip, but a good one. Gatlinburg has a way of being fun no matter what the weather does — and the Smokies are beautiful even when (especially when) everything is grey and misty. Would definitely do another quick overnight there sometime.
